The Suyian Conservancy covers an area of approximately 17,806 hectares (44,000 acres) and is named after the local Maa language for “African wild dog”. Located in the heart of the Laikipia ecosystem, it is an important wildlife corridor with a diverse landscape of grasslands, savannahs, woodlands and riverbanks. Originally a cattle ranch, Suyian was converted into a conservancy with the goals of conserving nature, reducing livestock production and promoting community development. The area is home to more than 100 species of mammals, including rare species such as the black leopard and African wild dog, as well as endangered species such as Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe.
