DAY 01 | START YOUR JOURNEY AT KING GEORGE ISLAND, ANNAR
King George Island – the largest island in the South Shetland archipelago, is considered the “gateway” to Antarctica. Located just 120 km from the Antarctic Peninsula and home to the archipelago’s only airport, it serves as a bridge between “real life” and “Antarctic life”. The island is home to more than 10 scientific research stations from various countries, operating year-round or seasonally – a remarkable achievement considering 90% of the island is covered in ice. The island also features a Russian Orthodox church with a resident priest.
However, the number of scientists here is still far outnumbered by the rich animal world: Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins, Weddell seals, leopard seals and countless seabirds such as skua and southern giant petrel. With an average temperature ranging from -6.5˚C to 1.5˚C, King George Island is the ideal starting point for the ultimate land exploration.
-
DAY 2 | EXPLORE ANTARCTIC SOUND
Antarctic Sound will be one of the first to touch down, located at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula – stretching like a tentacle towards Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost point of South America, also known as “The End of the World”. Named after the first ship to cross the strait connecting the peninsula and the Joinville Islands in 1902, Antarctic Sound offers a “sensory storm” of giant icebergs breaking off from the Larsen Ice Shelf.
Here, you will be confronted with giant “ice islands” as big as stadiums, along with a world of endemic creatures. Watch flocks of Gentoo penguins jumping around, or white-nosed gulls circling overhead – all creating a vivid picture in the middle of the snowy kingdom. For those who set foot in Antarctica for the first time, prepare your photography skills to capture unforgettable moments in this harsh but magical land.
Activities included in the expedition: Zodiac rafting with Silversea's expert team, or hiking trips to get closer to the heart of untouched nature.
-
DAY 3 & 4 | EXPLORING THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA
The Antarctic Peninsula , located about 1,000 km from Tierra del Fuego, is the first point of entry into the icy continent . It features spectacular landscapes of snow-capped mountains, emerald-green glaciers and massive icebergs. The region is dotted with international research stations and is home to thousands of pairs of Adélie penguins.
Activities include: Zodiac boat ride with Silversea team and hiking to explore the wild nature.
-
DAY 5 | SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS
The South Shetland Islands , located approximately 770 km from South America, are one of the most accessible parts of Antarctica. They are home to several international research stations and are home to elephant seals, as well as Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adélie penguins. King George Island is the largest island and an important scientific centre in the region.
Highlights include Deception Island , with its spectacular collapsed crater, where visitors can hike on lunar terrain or try soaking in geothermally heated waters. Elephant Island is also the site associated with the legendary Shackleton and his miraculous survival journey in 1916.
Activities include: Zodiac boat with Silversea team and nature hiking.
-
DAY 6 | END OF TOUR AT KING GEORGE ISLAND
King George Island , the largest of the South Shetland Islands, is considered the “gateway to Antarctica” thanks to its only airport in the region and its location just 120 km from the Antarctic Peninsula. More than 10 countries maintain year-round or seasonal research stations there, and there is even a Russian Orthodox church with a resident priest.
Despite its small scientific community, the island is home to a rich natural world: Adélie, Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins travel between the island and the Antarctic Peninsula; Weddell and leopard seals are common near the shore; and seabirds such as skuas and petrels are abundant. With an average temperature of -6.5°C to 1.5°C, King George Island is a unique starting point for exploring the icy continent.
